With the season opener against Louisiana Tech four days away, Missouri has released its depth chart for its matchup against the Bulldogs. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz expressed his confidence in his team while speaking to the media.

“Our goal going into camp was to establish the 22-deep,” Drinkwitz said at his weekly press conference on Sunday. We felt like we did that.

Here’s what you need to know about the depth chart before game time.

Are you running by committee?

On the depth chart, Missouri lists three running backs as starters in Elijah Young, Cody Schrader and Nate Peet. Drinkwitz confirmed that those three will see the bulk of his carries in Thursday’s game.

“I guess he’s going to be the one who gets the hot hands, or keeps the hot feet going,” Drinkwitz said. “Each of them has their own strengths and things they do well, and we play to those strengths until we think someone can carry the whole load.”

Pete, a Rock Bridge alum who transferred from Stanford to Missouri during the offseason, spent camp with what Drinkwitz called a “soft tissue” injury. The Tigers’ head coach said he hopes Peat recovers from the incident.

Freshman Tavorus Jones has also had injury issues in camp and Drinkwitz said he could play but won’t be able to see things in the game until he gets live reps during practice.

“Really, really talented,” Drinkwitz said of Jones. “I’m sorry that happened and it will be the cause at some point.”

‘Ors’

The depth chart released Sunday is filled with players listed as “or,” meaning the position is completely unsettled and could go either way. In addition to running backs, many other starters listed include tight end, wide receivers Z and H, safety and punt returner.

For the returner spot, Drinkwits said Chris Abrams-Drain could go first, but Luther Barden could also get a chance.

“It depends on how often we can get them to hit,” Drinkwitz said.

The depth chart does not list an established backup quarterback, with Jack Abraham, Sam Horne and Tyler McConnell all listed as possible options. Drinkwitz previously said the game situation will determine who takes the field should starter Brady Cook get hurt.

One factor Drinkwitz said didn’t factor into his decision was whether players would be transferred through the portal if they weren’t selected. He said transfer risk is not taken into account when determining playing time.

“If they give you something they don’t get, it makes it cheaper,” Drinkwitz says. “They have to get it. At the end of the day, I need to put my head on the pillow at night knowing that no matter what, I’m comfortable. And I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving someone something they didn’t get.

The long war is confirmed

The Tigers have finally named a starting punter. Sean Koetting is listed as having won the job.

Position competition is rampant in camp, which Drinkwitz lists as the most difficult to address on a consistent basis. At the start of the game week, however, Kotting found his place.

“It’s just consistency,” Drinkwitz said. “When we say the last four days are going to decide it, Sean had the best and most consistent of the four days and got it, so we’ll take it.

Jack Stonehouse was listed as a backup on Sunday’s depth chart. Luke Bauer was part of the race early on, but Kottingen and Stonehouse separated themselves.

Although it’s still a case of the first game, Drenwitz said if they stay strong in practice, the others may get a chance later.

“(Koetting) is our starting punter right now and we have every confidence that he’s going to go out there and perform at a high level. But just like the quarterback position, if it doesn’t go the way he wants to go, feel like we’ve got a really good guy there.”
