TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – Friday marked Mexico’s Independence Day and the second day of Hispanic Heritage Month.
From September 15th through October 15th, there are events around Tucson to celebrate and celebrate Hispanic culture.
On Friday, the nation’s oldest, continuously operating Mexican restaurant celebrated its big anniversary of 100 years in business.
“I think it’s a wonderful testament to people who love what they do. I think two women involved, my great aunt Monica and my mother Carlotta, have basically each run this company for the last 50 years. They’ve had two 50-year runs, we’re the new blood and now it’s been an amazing response from this community.” ” said Ray Flores, CEO of Sea Charo.
It’s a milestone that many businesses don’t see. From Flores Tia Monica as a caterer in 1922, to putting Chimichanga El Charo on the map, it’s been an unforgettable journey so far.
There were also many bumps in the road.
“The biggest challenge for me was going through Covid as a restaurant. I can’t imagine what she’s been through. She’s been through Prohibition, she’s been through the Great Depression, she’s been through world wars. But I think the most recent memory for us is that COVID has been an absolutely terrifying time for our family businesses,” Flores said. .
Flores El Charro has largely recovered from the plague and, thanks to the Tucson community, has been able to reach 100 years. El Charro also opened the door for other local businesses to thrive. Tour Tucson is featuring many of these businesses this Hispanic Heritage Month. Viva Tucson.
“It’s really a comprehensive campaign with a number of comprehensive events. There are over 30 events happening a month to celebrate Hispanic heritage in Tucson,” explained Megan Evans, Tucson’s Director of Tourism Communications.
It’s the first year for Viva Tucson and will focus on Tucson’s deep Hispanic heritage. You’ll find everything from mariachis, folkloric dancers, to classic Mexican cuisine to help you celebrate all month long.
“The importance of having an event like Viva Tucson is that it shows what’s important to who we are here. Hispanic heritage is part of everything we do here. It’s part of the food, it’s part of the arts and culture, it’s part of the architecture,” Evans said.
