NEW YORK (AP) — Hannah Waddingham wore Dolce & Gabbana with high-top fascinated sneakers on Monday, while Elle Fanning took to Hollywood in a dress designed by Sharon Long of her show, “The Great,” as the glamor back to the Emmys in the sticky humidity of Los Angeles.
Waddingham, from Ted Lasso, showed off her comfy white shoes under her strapless pink corset look. Fanning, with her hair in a bun, said she wanted to honor the creatives on her show that gave her her first Emmy nod. Fanning’s look was black and pink, embellished across the chest.
“I’ve always been inspired by ’50s old Hollywood glam,” Fanning said.
Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph had a fashion apology before arriving at the Emmys.
“A designer gave my co-star and I the same sketch for the same dress,” she said, after discovering it on set when Lisa Ann Walter showed Ralph what she wore to the awards.
“Up until five days ago I didn’t have any dresses, so Brandon Blackwood stepped up. He was in Japan and started stealing the dress on his flight across the Pacific,” Ralph said.
Ralph was resplendent in a strapless black velvet dress with an orange bottom and a thigh slit. She was carrying a small orange bag.
The stars all went out.
Zendaya, working with her stylist Law Roach, was in a classic strapless black corset look with a full skirt and a chic bow at the waist. It was Valentino and she was dripping in Bulgari jewels, including a fresh, new white diamond with a 4.45-carat center stone. She had pockets too.
Connie Britton was in a goddess dress by Monique Lhuillier in soft pink, a cape-like effect at the back. Severance’s Britt Lower wore a gold Venetian beaded gown with matching elbow-length gloves. It had high cut pieces and thin embellished straps.
“I felt like I wanted to wear outer space. I have an appreciation for fabrics, my mother was a home economics teacher. I feel good in it,” Lower told The Associated Press.
People’s style and beauty director Andrea Lavinthal said pink carried the night, although many other colors lit up the carpet.
“Pink seems to be continuing its dominance as the red carpet color of choice. There are just a lot of stars that gravitate towards different shades of pink,” she said.
Not Rachel Brosnahan. She stepped out in a plunging Pamella Roland column dress in pretty purple. She was adorned with tulle floral bow appliqués and pearls from the designer’s Fall 2022 collection.
Laverne Cox and Himesh Patel helped kick off the fashion show, she in a black Jean Paul Gaultier Couture mini-armor and he in a white tuxedo jacket, eschewing the usual black of the evening. Royal blue on Sarah Thompson (a Yellowjackets writer), poppy yellow and more—color took over the night.
“I’m quite warm, I’m in a three-piece suit. I like this suit, but I wasn’t expecting the heat,” said Patel.
Natasha Rothwell of “The White Lotus” chose red for a dress with short balloon sleeves and a hot item on the fashion carpet – pockets! It was custom silk taffeta from Safiyaa. Megan Stalter also went for red in a see-through dress that celebrated her curves. Severance’s Jen Tullock was in the red zone, a thigh-slit and structured sleeve number by Thierry Mugler, accessorized with pearl earrings.
“I’m a fan of his line. It’s elegant, but still has a sense of humor,” said Tullok.
Stalter, from Hacks, was in burnt velvet by Norma Kamali. She had a red artificial rose pinned between her breasts.
“It took my breath away and my words. It is a kind of sexy dress. It’s wild like me,” she said.
Jung Ho-yeon, her daughter and Louis Vuitton ambassador from “Squid Game,” wore a versatile, colorful look from the brand. It was custom in a tweed design with versatile threads. Her jewelry was also Vuitton.
“I still can’t believe it. It hasn’t sunk in yet, but I’m just going to enjoy the day and cherish the moment,” she said of her nomination.
Reese Witherspoon went for blue outfits and blue-themed sunglasses. Around the neck was an aquamarine, blue zircon and diamond knockout choker from Tiffany & Co. Amanda Seyfried wore a body hugger in pink by Armani Prive, paired with Cartier diamond earrings in platinum.
“I’m a mermaid tonight,” Seyfried said.
Another refreshing surprise for Lavinthal? Men ditching black for all-white tuxedos, including Succession’s Nicholas Braun in a double-breasted Christian Dior tuxedo. Andrew Garfield also went for white, along with Seth Rogan. Speaking of white, Jean Smart opted for it too, with an elegant collar that fell off one shoulder. Ellie Saab designed Kerry Washington’s short dress with a long skirt and organza lilies on one shoulder.
Washington’s black tights had some head-scratching. So did Kaley Cuoco’s Dolce & Gabbana tutu style and Julia Garner’s Gucci crop top in her dark brown velvet look with silver crystals.
“I thought we’d seen every cut on the red carpet, but the belly cut was something new,” Lavinthal said.
Among Lavinthal’s highlights was Lily James in copper Versace.
“It was very 2022, but it could have come right off a ’90s runway with chain and sculpted glasses,” she said.
Smart’s dress was made by Christian Siriano, as was Laura Linney’s white look.
Robin Thede also wore Siriano in stunning pastel blue, while Jerrod Carmichael was covered in fur in a long, white fox coat. Carmichael laughed at the heat and humidity.
“That was Puff Daddy’s coat. He wore it in a video,” the “Saturday Night Live” comic said.
Carmichael was shirtless under fur and wore a sunlit platinum necklace. His black satin pants were accentuated by the white underwear top that was sticking out. He was sockless in his black pieces.
Another Siriano fan? Melanie Lynskey from Yellowjackets. Hers was a mint green color with a sheer top that made her feel “half princess and half badass (expletive). Of the designer, she said: “He’s the sweetest man in the world and I adore him. I feel like he did something that was for me, for my body.”
Rachel Tashjian, fashion news director for Harper’s Bazaar, saw another trend.
“This year’s standout looks on the red carpet declared a turning point in celebrity style, hinted at by the recent Venice Film Festival: The craziest, loudest outfit is no longer the best. “Instead, stars are gravitating towards true elegance, even classicism,” she said.
She pointed to Zendaya, who is often a risk-taker.
“Here she was in a very traditional strapless Valentino dress and gorgeous late 1950s hair,” Tashjian said.
Similarly, Fanning was in a “very classic 1950s fashion dress with an old school dress.” she said.
Another of her highlights was Issa Rae in a flattering, flattering Sergio Hudson runway look on Sunday. But her absolute favorite was Lizzo in her “gorgeous red Giambattista Valli dress – a refined, glamorous statement that dazzles”.
Among other standouts was Ariana DeBose at Atelier Prabal Gurung. It was a hand draped lilac silk chiffon with a cape.
Euphoria’s Colman Domingo was already a winner as he walked the carpet. He won an Emmy for guest actor in a drama series at previous creative arts awards.
“I partied all week to the point where I had to wake up and take some ibuprofen,” he said.
Domingo wore an open brocade jacket and matching trousers.
“I want to feel like a king,” he said.
Domingo carried a fan with a platinum-filled battery in an effort to avoid the oppressive humidity, unusual for Los Angeles.
Mark Indelicato was in the red club. Indelicato’s hair was bright red and his black tuxedo had long tails parted like a train. And more of the men? Ted Lasso’s Phil Dunster went for a burgundy tux with black jackets, though his Lasso co-star Brett Goldstein stuck to black.
Meanwhile, Emily Heller went in a different direction. She had a “Kick Me” sign on the back of her short floral dress and some toilet paper taped to one shoe.
