Explaining the emergency feature of your smartphone

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The search for a missing kindergarten teacher in Memphis has many people wondering what to do or what to do if they are in danger and can’t call for help.

If you have a smartphone with you, some features allow someone to call 911 without dialing the numbers and send the exact location of the police and family members.

Most people don’t know about emergency SOS or how to set it up and use it. It can be a life saver in any scary situation.

On an iPhone, press the side power button five times quickly, or hold down the side button and volume button at the same time.

You don’t need to do anything else. When the timer hits three, the phone will sound an alarm that can scare off the person who is threatening you.

When the timer hits zero, the phone calls the 911 call center. It also notifies anyone in your emergency contacts that you’ve called for help and sends them a map of your location.

You need to prepare in advance. Select Emergency SOS in settings, make sure to toggle “Call with five clicks”.

If you don’t want to alert people around you that you’re calling for help or that you have a smartphone, you can choose to mute the alarm sound.

If you haven’t already, add emergency contacts to your list in the iPhone Health app.

Enter their name and address that you have already stored on your phone. When you use Emergency SOS, those emergency contacts will receive the message that you called 911 and may need immediate help.

You will also receive an updated location on the map if you move from place to place.

When we tested it, Apple Maps showed a friend’s location live, which street they were on, and even the direction they were traveling. All of this is done intelligently if you turn off the setting that triggers the alarm before calling 911.

On an Android phone, you’ll find the settings under Security and Emergency.

If not, look for it under “Advanced Features” as there are different Android models.

On Android devices, quickly press the power button three times to reach 911 and send emergency contacts.

You can also choose to send photos and audio recordings when you activate the alarm.

We’ve had mixed results testing this on a Google Pixel and a Samsung Galaxy device.

You must configure emergency contacts in security settings. You can use Emergency SOS on the Apple Watch by holding down the power button, but to call 911, you’ll need to slide the slider at the bottom of the display.

Another way to be safe is to keep the Apple AirTag with you, which shows your location wherever you go, as long as there is another iPhone nearby.

Before you try this, remember that it will automatically call a 911 operator after a few seconds.

So end the call before the count reaches zero. But tell your whole family about it. It could save their lives.
