There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you desperately try to recreate at home. in ‘Great dresses in fashion history,’ Fashionista editors are reviewing their favorite skins of all time.
There was once a time when Miley Cyrus, dressed in hot pants and T-shirts, was the most exciting thing on planet earth. After her infamous relationship with Nick Jonas came to an end, a Miley with darker, smokier hair and harsher makeup was born; in a 2009 interview with Seventeen, she said: “The day we broke up I was like, I want to dye my hair black now – I don’t want to look pretty; I want to look tough. I was rebelling against everything Nick wanted. And then I was like, I have to to be alone for now, and just figure out who I really am.” And so she did.
Shortly after one of the most shocking breakups of all time, Miley held a private concert at Club 1515 in Paris, wearing a look that would tease the image we now associate with her “Can’t Be Tamed” era.

For that performance, the teen idol wore a low-cut Cheap Trick tank top with low-rise leather shorts. She stacked three belts on top of each other and slapped on as many thick leather and metal bracelets as she could find. And in true 2010 fashion, a single pink and black feather earring draped down her shoulder and blended seamlessly with her dark ‘rebel’ hair.
Full of rock influences and aesthetically dark, brooding visuals, “Can’t Be Tamed” informed Miley’s music and style for years to come. Embrace your inner rebel with Miley-in-2010-inspired pieces in the gallery below:
