Robin Schneider is the Royal Queen of Adobe for Fashion with several Illustrator and Photoshop for Fashion courses on LinkedIn Learning. She has trained designers at major companies, including Juicy Couture and Liz Clayborne, and is co-owner of Belden Schneider Studio, a Los Angeles-based textile print design studio specializing in repeats, color reduction and re-dyeing. Her textbook Adobe for Fashion: Illustrator is being used in fashion schools around the world.

We are very excited to have Rob as a speaker at the Adobe Illustrator Summit, which takes place on September 22-23, 2022.
Heading up to the Summit, we thought it would be fun to get to know Rob better with a little Q&A.
How did you first get into this industry, professionally?
I started out as a scenic artist and graphic designer in the entertainment industry. I was working on a show called JAG and after 9/11 I decided I needed a change and went back to school for fashion design. I realized that there was a huge skills gap between fashion software and Adobe software and I was in a perfect position to bridge the gap.
What is the one thing/technique/goal/workflow/process/idea that is most often underestimated or misunderstood in your area of design?
Hands down is Graphic Styles! This is a huge time saver and yet so underutilized. With one click I can add a brush, stroke, fill or any other attribute I need. This ensures consistency in my work, which is important when I draw fashion apartments (technical illustrations of clothing.) When a collection of graphic styles is shared with my team, it’s easy to keep all artwork consistent between departments.
Obscure tip or trick you use all the time?
Changing the Illustrator default from butt caps and miter joints to round caps and round joints so I can use the “D” shortcut key for the default. For fashion we always use the round setting because we are showing the fabric and having it set by default is a huge time saver.
What are you most excited to share in your next session?
I will be presenting 2 sessions this year, Fundamentals Refresher and A Deep Dive on Patterns. In Fundamentals Refresh I’ll be retracing you with some of the basics you may have missed along the way, including how to change Illustrator’s default style.
