Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport has nabbed two industry awards.
According to the World Travel Awards panel, the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport is the “leading airport hotel” in North America.
The description of the award said that it is awarded to “acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.”
The hotel, which has a direct connection to the airport, has a private security entrance and access into the McNamara Terminal, as well as complimentary 24-hour shuttle service to the Evans Terminal.
The news of the award comes on the heels of Metro Airport receiving yet another honor — the Airport Efficiency Excellence Award from the Air Transport Research Society.
After an extensive research study, Metro Airport was selected as the most efficient airport in the 15- to 40-million passengers category in North America, based on 2020 financial year data.
Chad Newton, airport CEO, said due to the pandemic, the airport has had to make “tough financial decisions” while working to maintain a high operational level.
“Therefore, an award that recognizes the good work of our airport during a difficult time is very special,” Newton said.
Several factors were considered when determining which airports would receive this particular honor, ranging from the number of passengers and aircraft movements to non-aeronautical revenue.
Newton points to a number of factors that worked in the airport’s favor in receiving the recent recognition.
He said not only the Airport Authority staff, but also the airline partners, food and beverage and retail concessionaires, parking staff, various airport stakeholders and federal partners have all had a hand in earning the honors.
“These recent awards reaffirm what I already know; we have a great team at Detroit Metropolitan Airport,” Newton said. “We will continue seizing opportunities to improve and make our region proud.”
