MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Mississippi State University’s Meridian campus celebrated a major milestone Thursday night at the Riley Center.

MSU-Meridian and the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation held an after-hours business event to celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary.

Local businesses and alumni are invited to the event to meet and network with each other.

Campus Head Dr. Terry Dale Cruz said he was happy to celebrate the occasion with the community.

“It’s exciting to see how the university has grown in 50 years at Meridian. I think especially if you look at the impact of the downtown campus, the Riley campus has had on this community. The ripple effect, the impact on the local economy is enormous,” said Dr. Cruz.

CD Smith was one of the students who participated in the event and said that he is grateful to the university for giving him the opportunity to grow his education.

“Well, I’m proud to be a graduate of this campus here in Meridian. Again, being a non-traditional student, it would have been difficult to get out onto the main campus, but this campus has given me and many of us an opportunity to be proud of because we could not have done it without it. To continue our education, to work, to have a family and to do all of that,” Smith said.

Randy Carroll, another student, said he was happy to be able to spend time with other alumni to celebrate.

“It’s always good to get together with community leaders. Like-minded people who want to build this community and make it better,” Carroll said.

After 50 years, enrollment numbers are at an all-time high and the university is forever committed to educating future generations of students.
