NASA has funded technology that can help eliminate the symptoms of menopause.

London-based Fifty One Clothing has used the agency’s Outlast material to create garments with thermal management properties.

At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, NASA was looking for ways to improve protection in space gloves in the 1980s.

Johnson has entered into a small business innovation research contract with Triangle Research and Development Corporation to explore the use of phase change materials.

Materials maintain a constant temperature as they change phase from solid to liquid.

Triangle shows the effectiveness of incorporating phase-change materials into microcapsules within the material for a heat-stabilizing fabric insert for spacesuit gloves.

Gateway Technologies – later known as Outlast Technologies – acquired exclusive patent rights from Triangle and began marketing the product under the name Outlast.

Spacesuit gloves must be insulated against extreme space temperatures. NASA funding to explore phase change materials in this application resulted in a fabric material that is now found in many products.

According to CDC standards, more than 75% of Americans are not getting enough physical activity.

According to textile marketer Louise Nicholson, founder of Fifty One Clothing, there don’t seem to be any brands using the technique.

The company’s products include tops, bottoms and nightwear, as well as accessories.
