Nokia, Telefonica deploy 25G PN technology in Spain

The trial is the first to demonstrate symmetrical speeds of 20Gbps and demonstrates that state-of-the-art 25G PON can coexist with Telefonica’s GPON solution.

Telefónica has passed around 60 million fiber-to-the-home FTTH across its multiple business units. 25G PON offers massive scaled bandwidth to support new use cases and bandwidth requirements.

“Telefonica is the first operator in Spain to offer gigabit connectivity, but we’re not stopping there,” said Gonzalo Garzon, Head of Fixed Access at Telefónica Spain.

Consumer bandwidth demands never stop, and exciting applications like VR gaming are always evolving to make the most of available bandwidth.

“New FTTH technologies give us more opportunities for home connectivity. We can offer new business services on the same network with their greater capacity.

The 25G PON solution uses the world’s first 25G PON technology and includes Lightspan and ISAM access nodes.

Bjorn Capens, VP for Europe at Nokia Fixed Networks, said: “Thanks to our Quillion chipset, this 25G PON proof-of-concept with Telefónica showed that large bandwidth capacity can be easily added to their existing network, and live with them. Available PON technologies.

“This means customers on the same fiber line can be served by GPON, XGS-PON or 25G GPON, making upgrade cycles much easier to manage.”
