The National Weather Service says that light snow is expected to fall overnight into Monday and cause slippery travel conditions for the morning commute in northern Illinois.
A special weather statement and hazardous weather outlook were issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Sunday afternoon.
The alerts cover all of northeast Illinois, including the Chicago suburbs.
Snow rates will remain below one-half inch per hour and amounts will range from a coating to two inches, the NWS said.
Ambient cold temperatures may allow for slick spots to develop on untreated roadways by daybreak Monday.
“While the snow will be light in intensity with only minor accumulations, very cold pavement temperatures could result in unusually hazardous travel conditions, at least on local scales, for such a small amount of snow,” the NWS said.
Motorists planning to travel tonight or Monday morning should watch for slick spots on bridges, overpasses and snow-covered roads.
The snow will end mid to late Monday morning, the NWS said.
Motorists are encouraged to leave extra time for their commutes.
