The game
Murray State football team starts 98Th of the season Saturday when they travel to the Lone Star State to take on Texas Tech of the Big Twelve. Kickoff at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on Froggy 103.7 FM and nationally on Big XII Now/ESPN+.
Series at a glance
Saturday will be the first meeting between Murray State and Texas Tech, making the Red Raiders 112.Th Various opponents the ratios have faced in their 98-year history. It’s the first of four new opponents Texas Tech will face this season, along with Murray State vs. Ball State (Sept. 17), Lindenwood (Oct. 22) and Robert Morris (Nov. 12).
Scouting the Red Raiders
The Joey McGuire era officially begins in Lubbock Saturday, when the longtime high school head coach and college assistant take the field for the first time as college head coaches.
After playing in just four games last season with an injury, Oregon transfer Tyler Shaw is set to take over as QB1 for the Red Raiders this season. In limited action a year ago, Shaw completed nearly 70-percent of his passes, posted a 2:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and averaged 218.0 passing yards. Miles Price, Mason Tharp and Loic Fuongi, the top receivers for Shaw this year, averaged 13.8, 14.1 and 21.0 yards a season ago.
Defensively, the Red Raiders will use a new 3-3-5 formation this season. Leading the Texas Tech defense is linebacker Tyree Wilson, who led all returners with 13.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks last season. Defensive back Darrion Taylor-Demerson returns this season after collecting 62 tackles and a team-high three tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups in 2021.
Back-to-back
After winning its final three games of the year, MSU finished the 2021 season 6-5. In the year Combined with a 5-2 record in 2020, it marks the first time since 2010 and just the third time since 1999 that the Racers have posted back-to-back winning seasons.
Five wonderful leaflets
Five East St. Louis, Illinois high school graduates are currently on Murray State’s roster, and all five will play key roles for the Runners-up this season. Dylan Appleton, Jehadin Fridge, Lawun Powell, Cavan Reed And Damonta Witherspoon All of them currently have one depth chart for MSU going into the week.
Brotherly love
From walk-on to preseason All-American, Levi Nestler Racers had a career to remember. However, his final season in blue and gold will be even more special as he will be joined by his brother Luke on the offensive line. The Nesslers aren’t the only biological brothers on the team, as are identical twins Jared and Jared McCray They also return to Racers for a fourth season.
Go west to the Lone Star State
There are 948 miles between Roy Stewart Stadium and Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, making Saturday’s title race 1,096 miles farther than Murray has played since 2004, when they traveled to UConn. The game will be MSU’s third trip to the Lone Star State, having played at Texas A&M in 1940 and at North Texas in 1989.

Saturday marks the start of the 98th season of Premier State football. After a win over Mississippi Valley last season, the streak is now 54-39-4 all-time in openers.
