The Birmingham-area home improvement business is experiencing high material costs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Some people may be waiting to start home improvement projects now because of rising prices.

Fortunately, Hammer & Saw Home Improvement tends to book months in advance, but you’re getting fewer calls and new inquiries. According to business owner Jordan Anderson, many of the hesitations come from rising costs of building materials, making home improvement projects more expensive.

The materials with the biggest price increases, Anderson said, are glass windows and doors.

While their quotes typically last up to 30 days, Anderson said they had to cut that time to seven days due to price fluctuations.

“So we went to at least two customers on the site, we created a price for the project,” he explained. “There was a period of speculation. Then they asked us to quote again. It was a bit of a shock when we saw the price increase.”

Anderson said a manufacturer of glass commonly used for showers sent a letter several weeks ago indicating a 30% price increase.

Fortunately, most of Hammer & Saw’s customers have stuck with the projects, but Anderson says many people are definitely hesitant.
