TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) – In late December, Premiere Cinemas at Temple Mall will roll its final credits. Premier Cinema announced the closure of the 20-year-old movie theater on Sunday.

The movie theater was one of the first IMAX theaters in Central Texas. Premiere Cinema – Temple will be open on Christmas Day until the final screening of “Avatar: Waterway”.

Rob Brandenburg owns Peggy’s Coffee Shop, just a few doors down from the theater in the mall.

“I don’t think it’s an indication that the mall’s future is bleak, but I have a feeling it will be.” What is going to happen? Brandenburg said.

But at PJ Sassy’s classy boutique across the mall, her husband Paula Jackson is still reeling from the theater’s closing.

“I really don’t know what to say, I’m kind of scared,” Jackson said.

With business heating up, owner Brandenburg was looking to expand the coffee shop or other stores in the mall under My Skin and Candy and Others.

“You want to have confidence that the mall will have a good long life, but right now it’s hard to know when there won’t be a lot of development going on,” Brandenburg said.

It is now putting on hold all plans to expand its stores.

“Until we can get something more promising from the mall owners, any expansion for my stores in the mall is on hold,” Brandenburg said.

In a release from Premier Cinemas, Temple Theater director Buffy Lara released the following statement: “With the mall under new ownership, we hope the community will support them and all the improvements they are planning for the property.

But the boutique’s owner worries the closure is a preview of things to come.

“Maybe all of us stores should sit down and see what we can do to save the mall,” Jackson said. “I don’t know at this point.”

The management of Temple Mall and Premier Cinema did not respond to several calls regarding the closure of the theatre.
