Tesla topped the 2022 JD Power Tech Experience study but did not receive any awards.


The results of the 2022 JD PowerTech Experience Survey are in, and they provide a pretty good look at how car buyers perceive innovations in the vehicles they buy. It’s no surprise that Texas-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla dominated the study’s rankings — “officially,” at least.

The 2022 JD Power Tech Experience Survey awards points to automakers based on how innovations in their respective vehicles are received by car buyers. According to the 2022 JD Power Tech Experience Survey, Tesla topped the rankings with an Innovation Index score of 681. Despite Tesla’s top Innovation Index score in JD Power’s survey, the consumer perception firm said the EV maker didn’t deserve any of the awards. That’s because Tesla won’t allow JD Power access to proprietary information in states where that permission is required by law.

As a result, the top-ranked automaker in JD PowerTech’s 2022 Experience study for the premium segment is the Genesis, which scored an Innovation Index score of 643, nearly 40 points ahead of Tesla. Cadillac, which scored 584 points, and Mercedes-Benz, which scored 539 points, ranked second and third in the study’s premium category. Hyundai’s Genesis parent company scored the highest among mass market brands, scoring 534 on the Innovation Index.

When a dealer educates a new owner, it enhances the overall ownership experience,” JD Power said in a press release.
