LUBBOCK, Texas (KSBD) – Months after a nine-year-old black stallion known to fans as “Booth” was announced as the horse to replace the “Champion of Fear,” Tech fans across Texas are clamoring for his name. Gift prizes from United Supermarkets were at stake, especially since the company was leading the competition.
At a party Friday afternoon in Buddy Holly’s Holly Auditorium, Stephanie Rhode, longtime director of the Texas Tech Spirit Program, said all the tech-centric names were suggested.
“We got 10,000 names, anything to do with Texas Tech, ‘Victory Bells,’ ‘Wreck ‘Em,’ ‘Mark Adams,'” she said. “Anything related to tech is entered as a name.”
While fans are excited to see the new horse take to the field Saturday night, Sam Jackson, the program’s official veterinarian, said a learning curve is expected.
“The game is the most important thing this horse has ever experienced in his life,” he said. “Don’t expect him to be a fearless champion. That was a horse with 10 years of experience. That grew and grew and was almost automatic.
Shortly thereafter, Jackson turned the stage over to Texas Tech President Lawrence Shovanek.
“So from now on, Caroline, you’ll be a “Centennial Champion,” said the school president, Red Raider fans and art lovers applauded.
The statement concluded with a brief statement by Sidney Hopper, CEO of United Supermarkets.
“You know, this is such a legacy and we feel it’s such an honor. We are glad to be a small class tonight.
