Texas Tech QB Tyler Shaw headed to the locker room after an injury


The Texas Tech Red Raiders got off to a quick start with 14 points in their 2022 opener against the Murray State Racers courtesy of QB Tyler Shough.

Shough hit Loic Fouonji before the 1st quarter ended, before running back Tahj Brooks allowed it to go for another.

In the quarterback, Shaw pulled out of his pocket and went to the side of the racers. Instead of sliding on his knees, he came down hard on Murray State tacklers. While it’s unclear if this particular play caused Shaw’s injury, a few passes in the drive lend themselves to that theory.

As of the time this story was published, the extent of Shaw’s injuries was unknown. We’ll likely hear more during the post-game press conference.

Donovan Smith took over for Shaw in the 2nd quarter. Smith led the Red Raiders in hitting in 2021 before Shaw missed the final eight games of that season with a broken collarbone. In the year In 2021, Smith led the Red Raiders to their 6th win of the season over Iowa State, as well as an Independence Bowl win over Mississippi State. He opened the 2nd quarter against Murray State with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jerand Bradley. On the second drive of the game, Smith capped the one-play touchdown drive with a 39-yard touchdown pass for Fuonji’s second of the game.
