The Red Raiders arrived in Houston to prepare for the Texas Bowl

Houston – Houston, the Red Raiders have arrived.

Texas Tech began its game-week preparations for the TaxAct Texas Bowl on Saturday when the Red Raiders arrived in Houston and practiced for nearly two hours this week at an indoor facility adjacent to Rice Stadium, the team’s headquarters.

“I was excited to get to Houston,” the head coach said. Joey McGuire he said. “We got three days off with the guys going home. I thought we had a really fast practice today, which was good to see. We had a lot of practice to get ready for Ole Miss, so we carried a lot. It was a great day.”

Last Tuesday was the Red Raiders’ first practice when McGuire left the team for three days to celebrate with friends and family. About 35-40 student-athletes were on a team charter outside of Lubbock Saturday morning, many on the Red Raiders’ roster headed to Houston.

The Red Raiders arrived in Houston in the afternoon, participated in a team meeting with Texas Bowl officials and then took a short bus ride to Rice Stadium. McGuire and his staff treated the practice like a regular Tuesday workout, which fits in with Texas Tech’s regular season routine.

“Tuesday Saturday, that’s a big day to build on the effort we’re going to play,” McGuire said. “It’s the first day of the week, and I thought our effort was very good today.”

For Texas Tech’s stay in Houston, the Red Raiders will sport a new decal on their helmets that features the Houston skyline along with the traditional Double T. The Red Raiders will return to regular helmets featuring only the Double T for the TaxAct Texas Bowl.

Texas Tech spends Christmas Day with Rice in the preseason workout. The Red Raiders will have their usual Thursday walk on Monday morning with a field day with Depelchin Children’s Center families and the traditional Rodeo Bowl later that evening.

The highlight of the week will be the Red Raiders matchup against Ole Miss this Wednesday night at NRG Stadium. The game between the Red Raiders and Rebels is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and will be covered nationally on ESPN and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
