BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech center Johnny Jordan has homework to do before the season opener against Old Dominion.
Jordan will spend the next few days scouting the Kings’ defensive line to make his trash talk a little more potent.
“I try to get under their skin,” Jordan said with a smile.
Jordan will inherit the role from Brock Hoffman, who has provided a fiery presence up front for the Hokies in recent years.
“When Brock was here, I still did a fair amount, we were a one-two punch,” Jordan said. “That’s mainly fallen on my shoulders, just to keep up with people.”
The one-time Maryland transfer will take over for Hoffman as the team’s starting center.

A fifth-year senior last season, Jordan successfully applied for an additional year of eligibility. The new staff welcomed Jordan after losing three starters (Hoffman, Lecitus Smith and Luke Tenuta) to the NFL.
He provides valuable leadership to an offensive line with six true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen with little game experience.
Jordan has a lot (he’s played 40 career games), but he’s been through a series of coaching changes — he’s had five different offensive line coaches and 6 different head coaches (including an interim) — so he knows a thing or two about picking. A new disaster
That would be helpful with Tech looking to have Jesse Hansen or Braylin Moore in the lineup as a first-year starter at left guard. Hanson is a fourth-year junior, but has only 28 career carries, while Moore is a mid-year enrollee who spent spring camp at defensive end.
Tech coach Brent Pry said both will play in the opener.
Braylin Moore’s older brother Kaden will start at left guard along with Jordan.
Jordan describes the Moore brothers as “explorers.”
“They’re great to play around and they’re great,” Jordan said.
Jordan hopes Tech’s offensive line can lead the team to another bowl game. The Patriots’ first postseason appearance was in the Pinstripe Bowl last year, but it didn’t go the way they wanted, losing to their former team 54-10.
“I would love to win a bowl game, that would be huge for me,” Jordan said. “I only went one [so] It’s a big achievement for me and it’s a big achievement in my career, but really I’m just focused on the team and having the best year we’ve had and getting Coach Prine off to a good start. VT fans.
