The Texas Tech Red Raiders will play their second-to-last Big 12 game of the year in Ames, Iowa, as coach Joey McGuire prepares to take on the always-tough Iowa State Hurricanes on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 12-8. Iowa State won the last five meetings before Tech’s impressive 41-38 win last season.
Last season under coach Matt Campbell, Iowa State was a bit of a disappointment after starting the season ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll before finishing with a 7-6 record and losing to the Clemson Tigers in the Cheez-It Bowl.
Campbell has five-straight winning seasons in six years under Ames. Entering his seventh season, he is arguably the best coach in program history. In the year Since joining the Cyclones in 2016, he has compiled a 42-34 record. He led Iowa State to the highest mark in program history in picks (seventh).
Last season, the Cyclones had one of the best offenses in the Big 12. Led by quarterback Brody Purdy and running back Brice Hall, who was selected in April’s NFL draft, Iowa State was fourth in the conference in total offensive yards (424.5).
Purdy, along with Campbell’s sharp mind, helped the Cyclones lead the Big 12 in passing yards per game (263.8). Hall had the second-most rushing yards in the conference (1,472) but led with 20 total rushing scores.

This could be two very similar teams meeting each other at the right time for one and the wrong time for the other. Iowa State has a strong roster at most positions, and will be led by Joey McGuire’s first season at the helm. But make no mistake, it won’t take long for Tech to flex his muscles and it could happen against the Cyclones. If this is close, the Red Raiders have a chance.

It all depends on the play of the quarterback. There are rumors coming out of Ams that Matt Campbell thinks new QB Hunter Deckers has more potential than Brock Purdy. He will have a pair of reliable pass rushers in Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel.
They call it close, but Campbell yells something while he’s at quarterback. It’s too much for the Red Raiders on a road trip to Jack Trice Stadium.

This is currently one of those games where the two teams look evenly matched entering the season. But where will you be in November? That’s a very good question.
You know what you’re getting with a Matt Campbell-coached team at ISU, but for the first time in three years, he’s giving up talent at key positions and making continuity difficult. Texas Tech has an entirely new coaching staff and philosophy, which has had to take root at this point.
This could be a pair of teams fighting for their sixth win to get into a bowl game. The game is at Iowa State and it’s November. Slight edge to Cyclones.

It’s hard to match last year’s finish between these two. Tech kicker Jonathon Garibay hit a 62-yard field goal at the horn to give the Red Raiders one of their best wins of the season.
The Hurricanes look a lot different than last season. This game also comes in late November, making it difficult to predict exactly how coach Matt Campbell’s new offensive staff will fare.
But I don’t see a repeat of last season’s luck for Tech and first-year coach Joey McGuire. Getting a win on the road in Ames seems like a tall task depending on how things stand, though it’s still close.

Many expect Iowa State to drop significantly in 2022 due to the loss of quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Brace Hall. While those losses were impactful, the Cyclones finished a disappointing 7-6 with veterans on the roster. I attribute many of their losses to turnover. If the Cyclones can clean up the turnover on offense, I believe they can finish with the same record as last season or better.
With that said, I expect the Cyclones to be a better team than the Red Raiders. Texas Tech is rebuilding in Year 1 under Joey McGuire. The same cannot be said for Iowa State. The Cyclones have the added advantage of playing in Ames. The Cyclones take this one with a possible Big 12 title on the line.
