North St. Maryam business owners expressed their concerns about the construction project

Saint Anthony – The San Antonio Department of Public Works held an open forum Friday to address ongoing construction projects in the Bay Area.

At a meeting at the Rumble Bar at North St. Mary and Ashby streets, Public Works Director Razi Hosseini told residents and business owners that the $11.4 million multi-phase project has overcome minor setbacks but remains on track for completion by September 2023.

“At the end of October — we will open two traffic lanes that we closed,” Hosseini said.

By the end of the year, people will see more visible growth, especially in the area south of East Ashby Street in North St. Mary’s, he said.

But business owners say the ongoing project is killing their profits.

People are going to lose their jobs because the income is going down. These are real things happening to real people, said Chad Carey, president of the North St. Marys Business Owners Association.

One of Carey’s partners, Alan Johnson, owner of The Amp Room, said staff cuts had been a reality for the time being. “Before construction, we had four servers and three full-time bartenders. Now, we’re down to one cocktail server and one bartender.” Johnson said.

Johnson said the additional 365-day wait for the project’s completion comes as a concern for himself and his neighbors.

“This footpath was laid three weeks ago. They tore it down on Tuesday to do it again, and something went wrong,” he said.

Representatives from San Antonio’s District 1 office have scheduled a meeting to address parking concerns in the “Nightlife District” area. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 8 at the San Antonio College Victory Center at 2pm.
