China will increase its practical scientific and technological cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries in technology transfer, sustainable food innovation and solving global problems together, officials said Friday.

Clean energy, digital technology, agricultural technology, communications and satellites are areas where China and Latin America are expected to deepen cooperation.

China’s Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Zhigang, made his comments at the Latin American and Caribbean Chinese Community Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation. More than 20 leading scientific officials from the states participated in the online meeting.

According to Wang, China has made efforts to create cooperation and cooperation between developing countries, which has led to continuous progress in scientific and technological cooperation between China and Latin American countries.

The two sides face the common challenges of economic recovery, improving livelihoods and achieving sustainable development, Wang said.

At the same time, China announced that it will facilitate the establishment of the China-Latin America Sustainable Food Innovation Center and Technology Transfer Center, which was planned last year.

China will use the complementary strengths between it and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to deepen, broaden and more inclusive cooperation.

Argentina’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Daniel Filmus, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), said he appreciates the results of cooperation between China and Latin American countries. The forum plays an important role in promoting scientific and technological cooperation and building mutual trust.

He said that Latin American countries believe that the development of science and technology is a key way to promote national socio-economic development, and will continue bilateral and multilateral strategies with China.

Training, joint research projects and technology transfer are areas of cooperation, the officials said.

In December, China and CELAC member countries signed a joint action plan for cooperation in key areas from 2022 to 2024. They include high-level public exchanges, economics, food security, science, industry, culture and public health, among others.
